When Raymond BERGOUGNAN sought to establish his brand in the early 1900s, he chose to adopt a powerful brand name, « Le Gaulois », represented by a strong soldier from Vercingetorix’s army. (Learn more about our history)

The bicycle and tire market was booming at the time. Competition was fierce, so companies needed to quickly get their brand name out to as many people as possible! Several manufacturers, including BERGOUGNAN, decided to print the brand name directly around the entire circumference of the tire’s tread for greater visibility!

Produced until the mid-1920s, this tire was the key to the brand's success. Initially available only in gray, a red version was added to the catalog starting in 1910.

At the time, this model was manufactured in a wide range of sizes, but is currently available in only one size: 700x32A. (Learn more about tire types and sizes)

Whether from BERGOUGNAN or other manufacturers, the 700A was available in three widths: 28, 32, and 35 mm. The 28 mm was intended for road bikes, and the 35 mm for touring bikes. The 32mm, on the other hand, is a perfect compromise that works equally well for both racing bikes and touring bikes.
